Gold Imports Dropping in India
India is thought to be the largest consuming country of gold on Earth, a large amount of it being jewellery of investment quality (with a high level of caratage and insignificant design markups). Privately possessed gold in Indian is estimated at fifteen thousand tons. But with gold market prices sky high a lot of Indians are rushing to sell off their gold, seeing this as a chance to make money before gold prices go down again. Current gold prices in India are 15,790 rupees per 10 grams (US $317.70)
Under regular circumstances, India imports 90% of the gold it requires to fulfil demand. But since Indians are becoming net sellers of gold, imports have dropped sharply. In January merely 1.8 tons of gold were brought into India, in contrast with 14 tons in January, 2008. So far, no gold has been brought into India this month (Feb, 09). This continues with the general downward trend of 2008, throughout which only 660 tonnes were imported, compared to the usual 700-800 tons.
The beginning of the year is a time in India when people give gold as gifts, as part of India's wedding season. Wedding-goers are still buying, but aren't raising their budgets. They're just getting a reduced amount of gold with the same budget. And seeing as so many people are selling their gold, the local supply can fill the demand for wedding-ceremony gold without imports being necessary.
A considerable proportion of Indians think that the present gold prices are the pinnacle of the market and plan to sell their gold and re-buy it soon when the market price drops again. However, even though Indians may have become net-sellers of gold, the rest of the world are becoming net-buyers of gold, something which will likely continue as economic turbulence goes on.
