What is the relationship between Hoop Stress and Yield Stress?
Working on Mechanical Behavior of Materials homework and here is the problem i am presented with: determine the max pressure that an AISI 304 Stainless Steel Cylindrical Gas Tank can withstand using both Von Mises and Tresca. YIELD STRESS=205 MPA, THICKNESS=25 MM, DIAMETER=500 MM, LENGTH=1 M
He gave the following hint: you will need to use the stresses for a thin-wall cylindrical pressure vessel.
Now i have the equations for hoop stress (SH) and Longitudinal stress (SL) in relationship to pressure (P)
so all i need to do is determine how the yield stress (SY) relates to (SH) and (SL)
Yield stress is nothing more than a property of a material at which the Yielding phenomena begins to occur. There is no such thing as a relationship of yield stress to any stress of loading.
Hoop stress, and axial stress are stresses of loading the pressure vessel.
For the Tresca failure theory, you will need to combine them via Mohr's circle to find the maximum shear stress. If the maximum shear stress is greater than half the yield stress, the system fails. If it is less, then you have a safety factor of n_safety = Syp/(2*tau_max)
For the Von Mises failure theory, you will need to combine all stresses acting using the Von Mises stress formula. If the equivalent Von Mises stress (sigma_eqvm) is greater than the yield stress, the system fails. Otherwise, the safety factor is n_safety = Syp/sigma_eqvm
Hoop stress (t stands for tangential) is found by:
sigma_t = P*d/(2*t)
And axial stress in a closed cylindrical pressure vessel:
sigma_a = P*d/(4*t)
Radially, there is zero stress in the thin-walled pressure vessel model.
Tresca method:
Combining via Mohr's circle formulas, use the two furthest apart normal stresses:
tau_max = 1/2*(sigma_t - sigma_r)
Because sigma_r=0,
tau_max = 1/2*(P*d/(2*t))
tau_max = P*d/(4*t)
Thus, our safety factor is given by:
n_safetyTresca = 2*t*Syp/(P*d)
Von-Mises method:
sigma_eqvm = sqrt(((sigma_x - sigma_y)^2 + (sigma_x - sigma_z)^2 + (sigma_y - sigma_z)^2 + 6*(tau_xy^2 + tau_xz^2 + tau_yz^2))/2)
Since there are no sources of shear it simplifies to:
sigma_eqvm = sqrt((((sigma_x - sigma_y)^2 + (sigma_x - sigma_z)^2 + (sigma_y - sigma_z)^2)/2)
And as per our subscripts,
sigma_eqvm = sqrt((((sigma_t - sigma_a)^2 + (sigma_t - sigma_r)^2 + (sigma_a - sigma_r)^2)/2)
Because sigma_r =0:
sigma_eqvm = sqrt((((sigma_t - sigma_a)^2 + (sigma_t)^2 + (sigma_a)^2)/2)
Expanding:
sigma_eqvm = sqrt(sigma_t^2 - sigma_a*sigma_t + sigma_a^2)
Substituting:
sigma_eqvm = sqrt(P*d/(2*t))^2 - (P*d/(4*t))*(P*d/(2*t)) + (P*d/(4*t))^2)
Simplifying:
sigma_eqvm = sqrt(3)*P*d/(4*t)
And thus our safety factor is given by:
n_safetyVM = 4*Syp*t/(sqrt(3)*P*d)
Summary:
n_safetyTresca = 2*t*Syp/(P*d)
n_safetyVM = 4*Syp*t/(sqrt(3)*P*d)
So, if a safety factor of 1 is desired (worst design scenario), then the relations would be
for Tresca: Syp = P*d/(2*t)
for Von Mises: Syp = sqrt(3)*P*d/(4*t)
Solve for P, and subscript with max and t or vm:
for Tresca: Pmaxt = 2*t*Syp/d
for Von Mises: Pmaxvm = 4*t*Syp/(sqrt(3)*d)
Data:
Syp:=205 MPa; t:=0.025 m; d:=0.5 m;
Results:
for Tresca: Pmaxt = 20.5 MPa
for Von Mises: Pmaxvm = 23.67 MPa
You notice that these stress values are very close. The Tresca failure theory is more guaranteed to result in a safe design (often called conservative), but the Von Mises failure theory is more consistent with experimental results.
