Any special treatment for a stainless slide?
I'm thinking about buying a SIG P226, and I want to buy a two-tone model, but I've heard stainless steel requires a little extra care, and others tell me it doesn't. What extra steps, if any, are needed to ensure a stainless steel slide remains rust free?
I am along time Alaskan hunter - stainless is very popular here.
Back in the 1980's AMT made stainless 45's and the original 44 Auto Mag. Early stainless has a 'grain' to the metal - much like wood. If you bought a pistol with opposing grain - you had lots of troubles. Only solution was to keep the slide and all contact surfaces to a high polish using toothpaste and a Dremel tool.
Today we have much better alloys. I would never, ever, buy a regular blue rifle or pistol again. Stainless is the way to go. Only down side to stainless - especially the really shinny stuff - it can develope a patina - light brown stain - if not cared for properly. This stain is actually some of the more nobel metals leaching out. Remove the stain and the area will begin to pit. You do not see this issue with the newer alloy firearms that look more grey than shinny. The grey stainless guns weather better.
