I got the cannon xl2 about a week ago and been doing test shooting..?

I seem to get alot of noise in my movie i dont see noise in the view finder, I see a little zebra lines on the side, but when i convert it to a avi and play it back theres alot of noise..
The camera power dail is on A, 60i , when i turn power dail to TV the shutter is 8
all other settings when shooting - power dail A -aspect 4:3. , white balance A , gain A.
my question is for some one like me, where should i begin to look for
information to change settings to get the best picture out of my camera,
i know XL2 can do much better then the
standard AUTO setting.... what setting do i change...?

It should always be in Manual for best picture quality...Manual is where it's at!
I don't know the XL2 personally (we never met), but if it's anything like Panasonic ENG cameras (DVC200, HVX200, etc), then this might work.

Zebra lines indicate overexposure, not noise. Too much overexposure is bad, but a little is actually good. For one thing, there's bound to be some highlights anyway, and another: being that the viewfinders are always incredibly small, it's hard to say what your picture will look like on a properly sized screen. Many people make the mistake of getting rid of all zebra lines, and actually underexpose. It's better to be a bit overexposed.

As for the Power Dial, I don't know all the options, so I don't know what's the correct setting. "A" may stand for Auto, and in that case, change it. whatever it is, the shutter should never be at 8. That's just bad. 60 is good for most applications. around 200-ish is fine for outdoors, 2,000 is good for fast action, and 48 or 30 is good for low light. Typically, you don't want to go any lower than 30.

60i and 4:3 is where you want to be. There should be no problem there.

As for White Balance, there's probably a dial that says preset, A, or B...When in doubt use A or B. They're much more accurate cuz most of the time, the color temperature is not exactly 3.2 or 5.6K...A could also stand for "auto". Either way, white balance doesn't affect Noise...

Gain. Gain is probably the problem. If you are shooting in a room with little light (though it may seem like enough light to the human eye) and if Gain is in auto, the gain will go up filling your image with a lot of Grain...remember, Gain is bad cuz Gain = Grain. If there's an "L" option, which stands for "low", set it to that. You always want low gain (or no gain...even better).

Oh, yeah, and keep Iris in Manual. Especially when filming indoors, when there's sunlight coming through a window. That's just asking for underexposure. In manual, the iris should be around F2 for maximum brightness indoors. Remember: the iris is your friend...it'll never make your image grainy.

And make sure there's no Neutral Density Filter (ND) ON... ND darkens the image so it sucks indoors, but is quite useful outdoors.

And if you did your tests in a dark room, that may be the problem... Try turning on the lights. It may solve the problem without having to do anything...that's always good.

One more thing: when in doubt, overexpose...but only a little. If you underexpose, you're screwd, but if you are just a tad overexposed, you can always bring it down in post. Just make sure the subject's face isn't blown out though...
